The Heritage of Princess Yachts

From its home in Plymouth on England’s south coast, the company combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge engineering. Every yacht is designed and built with one purpose in mind: creating an exceptional experience on the water.
The story of Princess began in 1963 when three friends Cliff Viney, David King, and Brian Phillips set out to establish a boat charter business. Their first project, the Project 31, was built in a rented shed in Plymouth. When the boat sold almost immediately, they recognised a greater opportunity: designing and building high-quality motor yachts. Between 1966 and 1969, more than 150 Project 31 yachts were sold, laying the foundations for what would become Princess Yachts.
History and growth
In 1970, the Princess 32 was launched, the first model to bear the Princess name.
The yacht was a huge success and led to international growth. During the 1980s, Princess developed larger and faster yachts, including the iconic Princess 45, which was the UK’s largest series-produced motor yacht at the time. The 1990s were marked by innovation, with dozens of new models and the introduction of the popular V Class series. In 2001, the company name officially changed to Princess Yachts International, confirming the brand’s global reputation. Today, Princess ranks among the world’s most prestigious yacht builders.

Design and Development
Every Princess yacht begins in the Princess Design Studio. Here, designers, engineers and naval architects work together on new models. The initial sketches are then turned into digital designs and even life-size mock-ups, so that every detail can be assessed before production begins.
Preparation and Production
During the preparatory phase, all key components are manufactured separately. In-house departments produce hulls, build furniture, manufacture metal parts and assemble complete electrical cabling systems. Thanks to this vertical integration, Princess can guarantee an exceptional level of quality.
Assembly
Once all components are ready, they are brought together during the assembly phase. Depending on the size of the yacht, this phase can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. During this process, interiors, engineering systems, electronics and all luxury fittings are carefully installed.
Testing and Delivery
Before a yacht is handed over to the owner, it undergoes extensive checks. First, systems are tested in specialised test facilities, followed by extensive sea trials. During these trials, thousands of checks are carried out to ensure that every system functions perfectly.
Today, around 3,000 specialists across several production sites in Plymouth are involved in the construction of Princess yachts.
